About This Guide

Build a cozy spruce wood mountain cabin in Minecraft with a steep snow-shedding roof, covered front porch, and working stone fireplace chimney. This intermediate house build works in Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, version 1.20+ and above. Budget around 1 hour for construction — have all materials in your inventory before you begin.

Difficulty: Intermediate

The Intermediate rating reflects either multi-layered construction, a larger footprint that demands planning ahead, or simple redstone circuits. You should be comfortable with basic survival mechanics and resource gathering before starting. Budget extra time for iteration — not everything lines up perfectly the first try.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Dig into the mountainside and lay the foundation

Cut 2 blocks into a snow-covered hillside so the rear wall is naturally insulated by the mountain. Mark a 10x8 footprint with the back wall flush against the cut face. Raise a cobblestone foundation 1 block above the surrounding snow line — this lifts the floor above melt puddles and visually grounds the cabin. Orient the cabin face downhill for a scenic view.

Step 2: Frame the log walls

Place spruce logs at all 4 corners and every 2 blocks along each wall, running them 4 blocks vertically. Fill between the log pillars with spruce planks. The alternating dark log and lighter plank panels create the classic timber-frame cabin pattern. On the 10-block front wall, leave a 2x3 centered door gap and one 1x2 window opening on each side of the door.

Step 3: Add the covered front porch

Extend the cabin footprint 2 blocks forward along the full 10-block front face to create a wraparound porch. Place 2-block-tall spruce log posts at the 2 outer porch corners. Span spruce slab porch roofing at Y+3 connecting all 4 porch corners. Add 1 spruce stair step down from the porch to the snow grade on each end.

Step 4: Build the steep pitched roof

Alpine roofs need steep pitch to shed snow. From the top of the 4-block walls, raise the ridge 4 more blocks at center — this gives a 4:4 pitch (45 degrees). Build gable triangles using spruce planks on each 8-block side. Lay spruce stairs from the ridge outward in descending rows, letting the roof overhang 1 block past the porch posts on the front and 1 block past the walls on sides and back.

Step 5: Build the chimney and add exterior lighting

Center a 2x1 stone brick chimney on the back wall, running from the interior floor up through the roof to 3 blocks above the roof peak. Place a campfire at the interior base of the chimney shaft (campfires produce continuous smoke indefinitely without fuel). Hang lanterns from the 4 porch eave corners and place 1 lantern on each porch post for warm exterior lighting.
