Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Lay the Foundation

Mark a 9x9 square on flat ground with oak planks. Clear any grass or debris inside the square and level the ground. Place the first layer of oak planks filling the entire 9x9 area — this is your floor and cottage footprint. The 9x9 size is large enough for a proper cottage feel while staying quick to build for beginners.

💡 Tip: Mark all four corners with a cobblestone block first — it makes leveling and measuring much easier and you can remove the markers later.

Step 2: Build the Walls

On top of the oak plank floor, build four walls 4 blocks high using oak planks. Leave a 3-block wide, 2-block tall doorway opening in the front wall (center). Use cobblestone for a small chimney stub on the right side. For side walls, leave a 1-block wide, 1-block tall window opening in each at height 2 from the floor.

💡 Tip: Keep walls plumb and straight by checking every few blocks. A slightly crooked cottage is a rookie mistake — a straight wall is a clean build.

Step 3: Add the Roof

Build the cottage roof using an inverted stair structure. Place oak wood stairs upside-down around the entire perimeter, one layer above the wall tops. Fill any gaps with oak wood slabs. Extend the roof out 1 block past the wall on all four sides for proper overhang.

💡 Tip: Start at the corners and work toward the center. Corner stairs first make the whole roof easier to align.

Step 4: Install Windows and Door

Place glass panes in the two window openings on the side walls. For the front door, place a regular oak door at the doorway. Place 2 lanterns on each side of the front door for warm evening lighting.

💡 Tip: Lanterns on either side of the door instantly make a cottage feel inviting at night — it is the single highest-impact decorative element for the entrance.

Step 5: Build the Interior

Place a crafting table and furnace just inside the cottage near the entrance. Place torches on the interior walls every 4 blocks for proper lighting. Set up a chest near the crafting table for storage.

💡 Tip: Furnaces need airflow — do not seal them against walls without a 1-block air gap above. Smelting food and tools is a daily need in Minecraft.

Step 6: Add Garden and Landscaping

Outside the cottage, create a small flower garden by placing grass blocks and flowers in front. Add oak fence for a cottage fence line. Place oak leaves blocks in decorative clusters on the roof corners. Add lanterns on fence posts at the front corners.

💡 Tip: Odd numbers of flowers (7, 11, 13) look more natural than even numbers. Cluster them rather than spreading evenly — real gardens are messy.
